Dry skin brushing is exactly as it sounds… brushing the skin in a consistent and particular pattern with a dry brush. Ideally, this is done as part of your Waking Up Ritual.
Did you know that your skin is the largest organ and the largest receptor of external stimuli? Caring for your skin impacts the care of your whole body. When dry brushing, you are exfoliating the skin while increasing circulation, helping your body eliminate toxins by boosting the lymphatic system, stimulating digestion and optimizing whole body function. Body brushing brings blood flow to the skin, boosts radiance, stimulates your nervous system and leaves you with a sense of authentic energy.
This is our Dry Skin Brushing regimen…
It’s simple… use firm, small strokes and always brush toward the heart (where the lymph system drains)! Brush each section of the skin 3-10 times. The entire process can take 3-10 minutes, on average … whatever feels right for you.
- Start on the stomach and brush in a circular clockwise motion which stimulates you centrally and gets your digestive system and spleen firing.
- Brush the bottom and top of each foot and move up the legs using continuous strokes.
- Brush the palm of each hand and move up the arms using continuous strokes.
- Brush armpits and groin toward the heart.
- Brush your neck lightly toward your heart.
- Get as much of the back as you feel comfortable reaching.
- To finish, brush in a circular counter-clockwise motion on your stomach.
Your skin might be more sensitive, when you begin Dry Skin Brushing… start lightly, pay attention to how you react and to how it makes you feel. You might feel tingling and the skin might turn slightly pink… not to worry, it is the blood and lymph system activating… this is great (it should not be red and it should not sting). If it hurts at all, use less pressure. Please watch for rashes or irritation and always let that dictate how you take care of your skin.
What about the scientific evidence? Like any aspect of wellness (or life), we encourage you to do your own research, explore new things, and gauge the effects for yourself. Anecdotally, we both find dry skin brushing to be a positive part of our Waking Up Ritual. It is incredibly nourishing and goes beyond our skin benefitting, plus, it offers us authentic energy to start our days.
